I've found two very good answers on the question of focusing or forgetting from these two questions.

Repetitive thought vs. Focused thought

Focus on what we want?

My next question is: How can I effectively forget about the things I want? If I'm feeling good about receiving it, what are some tips to keeping it out of my mind?

In one of Stingray's answers in a question above, he said to feel as if recieving it is the next step and expecting to receive it, instead of being excited about it. I feel excited about receiving it so is this a bad thing? How can I change this within myself?

Edit:

I realized that I should put more details up. I recently applied to a very selective grad school and am hoping to get in. If I were to try and feel as if it were the next logical step, would thinking about how much financial aid they would give me and looking at their viewbook while wondering what it will be like there help?

I think Appreciation is key. Whenever your desire pops into your head say and feel thank you as many times as it takes till you forget about what you want. I also like to think, "I am ready to receive my highest good". Otherwise, have fun and just notice all of the vibrational matches to your desire coming into your life experience. In this way, all of life becomes exciting, not just the prospect of recieving your desire.

To me, even though I prefer repetitive thoughts about the thing I want, it also works to pretend that I have no urge. As if the thing I want is way at hand if I am willing to take it, but I say to myself: 'Oh, there's no rush!' and completely ignore the thing. It's all pretence at first, but after a while it grows on you. :)

The best way to forget what you want is simple, just do it: forget what you want, and the LOA will manifest your desire in the right time frame! It is simple as that, and there is no secret to this method, you just do what you have to do, and wait.
