Who wins if two people have conflicting desires?

Two people want the exact same job position at a company. Both are well qualified and both strongly believe they are going to get the job. Who will the universe grant the job to? Or two football teams at the Super Bowl believe they are going to win the game. Who wins? Or several candidates each believe they are going to win the Presidency.

How does the universe choose between those who want the same thing, and actually believe they are going to get it?
