If everything is controlled by thoughts. Then it would be logical to conclude that we are just a thought away from our desires. Is it really that simple? And if so then why do we make our lives so diffictult?

We make our lives difficult because we are human and we let our egoic minds get in the way of the natural flow of life.

As for being just one thought away from everything we desire, I guess it depends on what that one thought would be. I think for most people the spiritual journey is a process of growth and self awareness and requires a strong desire and a lot of inner work to reach an awakened and contented state.

Some people have a spontaneous awakening ( Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie ) where they realize in an instant, at an experiential level, who they really are and as a result their lives change dramatically. I don't know if this could be considered one thought away from their desires but definitely could be seen as one moment away from fully awakening.
