I have simplified the basic premise of the Law of Attraction:
In accordance with the Law of Attraction, you attract into your life those things, circumstances and conditions that correspond with the nature of your dominant, habitual thoughts and beliefs - both conscious and subconscious. Basically, everything, including yourself, your thoughts and anything else you may or may not want to experience, is pure energy vibrating at different frequencies. The basic premise of the Law of Attraction is that like energy attracts like energy.
You attract to yourself that which you are in vibrational harmony with, not that which you long for or even deserve. Your dominant frequency is determined by your dominant mental attitude, which itself is determined by your habitual thoughts and beliefs. The bottom line is that you attract to yourself that upon which you concentrate your thoughts. There is no judgement call involved about whether a particular thought is "good" or "bad" or whether its corresponding circumstance is "deserved" or "undeserved". The Law of Attraction is neutral. It does not judge, punish or reward. It simply serves to bring the physical manifestation of thought to its original source i.e. the thinker.
You do not have to learn to work with or apply the Law of Attraction. Being a Universal Law, it is already working perfectly in your life. Your goal is to adjust your mental attitude by changing your predominant thoughts and beliefs.
Know though that the Law of Attraction is just ONE of the Universal Laws. There are another major Seven Laws according to ancient Hermetic Teachings.
I trust this explains the basic premise of the Law of Attraction but recommend these articles for further understanding.

Welcome, once you have done your research, and reading on the LOA, you will enjoy having the control to manifest your desire, knowing that the LOA will manifest your desire for you! Good luck.

@Stingray: May I be nosey? I don't see you or Vesuvius much lately giving detailed answers to the questions posted...are you 1) too busy - 2) taking a holiday's time - 3) planning on the site being runned only by the other contributors? I miss your answers! Sorry if it's none of my business, just mean well. :P RSVP
@Bridget - Mainly just been a bit busy, though I'm also not too keen on turning the site into The Stingray Show :) ...so I like to take a back seat from time to time especially if others are coming up with answers that I already agree with.
@Stingray: Thanks for replying! I particularly wouldn't mind The Stingray Show :) Your answers were most comprehensive and easy to understand! x
